| Over the years GA Barnie Group has employed a large number of apprentices, across multiple disciplines. GA Barnie Group prides itself in providing quality workmanship, while also adopting a ‘right first time’ attitude towards all works we undertake.
We cover a wide range of projects throughout Scotland, with branches in Inverness, Wick, Orkney, Stornoway, Elgin and Aberdeen, we are able to undertake and complete many large and small projects. The company policy that no project is too big or too small and that distance is no object has ensured a steady rise in work for the company, which has helped to maintain a steady flow of apprenticeships across the company. |

Current Apprenticeship Opportunities
Apprentice Electrician – Fort William Branch
SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installations
This opportunity allows you to work full time, while also attending college to completed the required SVQ in the requirements of electrical installation to BS7671:2018 at Level 3. When you’re not at college you will work alongside out existing Electrical and Mechanical team to complete projects across area and gain the vital knowledge required to complete the various stages of your apprenticeship.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a can do attitude and a willingness to learn, but we also need our applicants to have passed the SECCT Pre-Employment Assessment and have minimum C passes at National 5 Level in Maths, Physics and English.
A full UK driving licences is not essential during your first couple of years as an apprentice, but will be required for 3rd year and onwards.
Apprentice Heating and Ventilation Engineer – Inverness Branch
The course will result in in a SVQ Level 3 in mechanical Engineer Services: Heating and Ventilation.
The course will be delivered and governed by BESA Training and will cover the following:
- Industrial, commercial and domestic
- Safe use of plant & tools
- Installation of copper piping
- Installation of low carbon steel piping
- Installation & design requirements of hot water heating systems
- Installation & design requirements of heat emitters
- Hot & cold water services
- Oil supply system requirements
- Health & Safety in the workplace
- Welding technology
- Testing of pipelines
- Heating control Theory
The apprenticeship’s are for a fixed term of 4 years and will be delivered via a combination of “on the job training” and attendance at either Kelvin College, Glasgow on a block release basis, with accommodation being arranged by GA Barnie Group Ltd.
Entry Requirements.
- Good Maths & English
- Successful pass of BESA pre-assessment Test, which can be taken online.
- Good work ethic
- Willingness to learn.
Multi-skilled Apprentice – Inverness Branch
GA Barnie Group are looking to recruit 2 No. Multi skilled Service and Maintenance Engineer Apprentices to join our busy service and maintenance department based in Inverness.
The apprenticeship will be for 4 years and will consist of block release to college in Glasgow and on the job training with experienced engineers.
This is an intensive training programme and would ideal suit school leavers with Higher qualification whom are looking for a more practical career path than university.
The apprenticeship will be multi – disciplinary and will cover:
- Gas and Oil Servicing and maintenance.
- Heating Systems
- Water Systems
- Ventilation Systems
- Air Conditioning – FGAS
- Electrical 18th Edition wiring
Ideally we are looking for persons with Higher maths and a science and a practical mindset, can do attitude and willingness to challenge themselves.
Air Conditioning Apprentice – Inverness Branch
GA Barnie Group are looking to recruit 2 No. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprentices to join our busy Renewables and Air Conditioning department based in Inverness.
The apprenticeship will be for 3 years and will consist of block release to college in Glasgow and on the job training with experienced engineers.

This is an intensive training programme and would ideal suit school leavers with Higher qualification whom are looking for a more practical career path than university.
The apprenticeship will cover:
- Installation and Maintenance of:
– Commercial refrigeration display equipment
– Commercial cold room
– Air conditioning systems - Commission and de-commission of refrigeration or air conditioning systems
- F Gas (Category 1)
- Carry out safe electrical working practices
- Working principles, installation options and regulatory requirements for micro-renewable products
- Contribute to the improvement of the business product and services for HVACR activities.
Ideally we are looking for persons with Higher maths and a science and a practical mindset, can do attitude and willingness to challenge themselves.
Plumbing and Mechanical Apprentices – Elgin Branch
GA Barnie Group are looking to recruit 2 No. Plumbing and Mechanical Apprentices to join our Plumbing and Mechanical team in Elgin.
You will complete an SVQ Level 3 in Plumbing at Moray College.
The apprenticeship will consist of college block release throughout the year and ‘on site’ learning under the supervision of our existing plumbing and mechanical teams.
There will also be the opportunity to gain knowledge in specialised areas such as: – Oil & Gas servicing – Ventilation – Renewable energies/ technologies
We’re looking for individuals who have a passion for learning new skills and pay particular attention to detail.
The successful candidate must be able to work well in a team but also be able to use their own initiative to carry out works independently.
Good communication skills, along with time keeping and excellent teamwork skills are essentials.
The ideal candidate should be willing to work away from home on projects. Full UK driving licences is desirable but not essential. NAT 5s in Maths and English are preferable.
