G & A Barnie Group Ltd

Formed in Wick Caithness by Alex and Gordon Barnie in 1985, G & A Barnie initially undertook domestic and commercial electrical installations.  The brothers quickly gained a reputation for expertise, high quality personal service and successful completion of contracts on time.

The opening of what has now become the group headquarters in Inverness in 1991 allowed the scope of works undertaken, together with the geographical areas covered to expand.

In October 2003 Bartec Fire and Security was formed to allow the company to undertake fire, intruder alarm, CCTV, access, and other security installations. Bartec now hold national planned and reactive maintenance contracts for many leading companies With the company expanding into mechanical installations and maintenance works contract`s are now regularly undertaken for multi-million pound projects.

Further branches in Stornoway, Elgin, Kirkwall, together with a dedicated facility within the UKAEA plant at Dounreay quickly followed.  An additional branch in Aberdeen opened in 2009 to provide a logistics base to support recently won contracts, including NHS Grampian for planned and reactive electrical mechanical works. Together with radar refurbishment works for Aberdeen Airport on behalf of National Air Traffic Services (NATS).

The continuing growth of the company was rewarded in 2009 with the awarding of Contractor Tier 1 Status.  This allows Barnies to undertake principal Contractor duties on Ministry of Defence projects with a value of up to £20,000,000 throughout the UK. A role Barnies regularly and successfully fulfills.

G & A Barnie Building Services Ltd were awarded (QMS) ISO 9001; 2008 in February 2009, with each of its branches holding individual accreditation.  This was followed in August 2011 with the awarding of (EMS) ISO 14001: 2004 for the companies environmental management systems.

Barres, the renewable energy arm of the company was formed in June of 2011.  Barres undertake design, installation and maintenance of air & ground source heat pumps, solar thermal and photovoltaic (PV), biomass and other “renewable” installations. The company holds MCS accreditation and is able to offer advice and assistance to obtain government funding for renewable energy installations.

In 2012 the water treatment division of the group was formed.  Operating from all the companies branches, L8 trained engineers provide Legionella prevention, chlorination, risk assessment and remedial works to both public bodies and private companies.

The continued expansion of the company was reflected in the renaming of the company in 2012 to G & A Barnie Group Ltd.

A second branch in Inverness was opened in 2013.
